Spirituality

Fátima

This Basilica is the most recent construction in the Fatima Shrine complex and is dedicated to the worship of the Holy Trinity.
The project was designed by the Greek architect Alexandros Tombazis. It has 8,633 seats and an area of 40,000 m². It is 18 meters high, with an external diameter of 125 meters, and the roof is supported by two beams with a clear span of 80 meters.

The foundation stone was laid on June 6, 2004 and was inaugurated on October 12, 2007 by the Vatican Secretary of State, Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone, on the occasion of the 90th anniversary of the apparitions of the Virgin Mary in Fatima. On August 13, 2012, the church was elevated to the category of Basilica.

In April 2008, the Secil Civil Engineering Prize 2007 was awarded to José da Mota Freitas for the structural design of the church of Santíssima Trindade. The “Outstanding Structure 2009” award was also given to this building by the International Association for Bridge and Structural Engineering – IABSE (this award is considered the Nobel Prize of Civil Engineering, as it recognizes the most outstanding, innovative, creative or stimulating structures in recent years).
