Tomb of D Afonso, 4th Count of Ourém

History

In the Mother Church you can visit the Crypt of D. Afonso, Count of Ourém and Marquis of Valença, also known as the Chapel of the Marquis, built in the 15th century. In the center is the tomb of D. Afonso, who died in 1460, erected in Ançã stone, with a jacente. Its front is decorated with plant motifs, and it also includes D. Afonso’s coat-of-arms and a biographical inscription. On the lid of this tomb chest, you can see the lying statue, in which the figure of King Afonso wears a long pleated tunic. His face is considered to be one of the best sculpted in Portugal before the Renaissance.

It is a unique example of Gothic architecture, with a strong military influence.
