Sanctuary of our Lady of Ortiga
Fátima
The Shrine of Our Lady of Ortiga is a Marian shrine located in Ortiga.
Our Lady appeared here around 1758 to a shepherd girl who was tending her flock and asked for a little sheep. The little girl, who was mute from birth, felt her tongue loosen and replied to the Lady that she wouldn’t give her the sheep without her father’s permission. The little girl ran to tell her father of the Lady’s request, who was amazed and overjoyed to see his daughter able to speak and immediately ordered her to do everything the Lady asked. The shepherdess returned to the place of the apparition to speak to the Mother of God who, in response, asked that a chapel be built there and promised that she would grant many graces there. When the girl’s father went to the place she had indicated, he found an image of the Virgin Mary on a rock among the nettles, which he took with him to Casal de Santa Maria, but the image disappeared from there, only to be seen again in its original place among the nettles.
A small chapel was built on the site of Our Lady’s apparition, which was later enlarged to become a shrine.
