Ruins of the Chapel of São Sebastião

Spirituality

Ourém

Mannerist-style chapel located in São Sebastião. King João I and Constable Nuno stayed here with their troops on August 11, 1385, when they were on their way to the battle of Aljubarrota.  The chapel was heavily attacked by the French invasions and burned down in 1810.

Its exposed stone structure is an x-ray of the successive interventions the building has undergone over time. Inside, the chancel stands out with its altar base and vaulted roof.

In 2012 and 2013, this municipal property underwent a first stage of consolidation.
