Mother church

In 1445, D. Afonso, 4th Count of Ourém, was granted permission to transform the Church of St. Mary of Ourém into a Collegiate Church. Thus, in 1453, the Collegiate Church of Santa Maria das Misericórdias was built on the site of the parish church, bringing together the four parish churches of Ourém, making it one of the largest and oldest Collegiate Churches founded by the ecclesiastical action of the Ducal House of Bragança. With the earthquake of 1755, the original church was destroyed, with only the crypt remaining. By order of King José I, the church was rebuilt in the Pombaline style between 1758 and 1770. The Collegiate Church ceased to exist in 1834.

Currently also known as Capela do Marquês, in the Church of Nossa Senhora da Visitação or Igreja Matriz de Ourém you can visit the crypt and tomb of Count D. Afonso, Marquês de Valença, which has been classified as a Property of Public Interest since 1949.
